The Design Concept of General Education Course

"The concept of General Education or Liberal Education can be traced back to the ancient Greek period, the Middle Ages or the pre-Qin period of China. Its purpose is to cultivate a free human being with independent mind and balanced development. Although modern universities have become the hall of pursuit of advanced knowledge, the spirit that existed from the ancient times is still the root and motivation of its development. In addition to professional development, the more important purpose of university education is to train the mind, cultivate personality, shape values, and pursue the truth. Only by being in a diverse environment, we can expand our horizons, cultivate the ability to think freely and lifelong learning, as well as boost a change in the society through continuous self-improvement. This general education course is set up in the aim of achieving the above-mentioned ambitious goals.
The development direction of the school is mainly based on biomedicine. Compared to other comprehensive universities, the learning environment is more homogenous. Through well-designed and tailor-made general education courses, students can learn the latest developments in other disciplines, cultivate cross-field thinking skills, make their academic expertise more relevant, or even develop second expertise. In addition to the common knowledge delivery, exchange and stimulation of ideas, training of critical thinking skills, the general education course of the school has recently emphasized on implementation, social responsibility, and integration with the development of the community. Participating in various activities in the course can pull one closer to the warmth of society, discovering the energy from the locals, promoting the constant dialectic between theory and practical, and also conforming to the spirit of the school motto "Compassionate mind and skill, put knowledge into practice".
Therefore, considering the professional development background of every student in the school, it is too focused and narrowed down on the development of just a single field. The general education course of the school is unique by bringing up the ability to cultivate cross-disciplinary learning. It also emphasizes students to have "critical thinking", "self-learning", "professional excellence", "innovative leadership", and the core competencies "international vision". Hoping that these can help students to develop basic school level literacies, such as: "communication and introspection", "caring and respect", "team and dedication", and "ethics and humanities", which cover the full range of excellent medical study and life science professionals.
In addition to adhering to the university general education and the spirit of whole-person education, in this school, biomedicine is the main development direction. Thus, another characteristic about this course is that, students will be expected to grow towards the same goal as the school upon completion of this general education course. For example, general course of "Philosophy and Mind" has established "Psychology: From Cognitive Development to Advanced Cognition" in long term; "Technology and Society" field has continued to provide courses like "Medical and Social", "Environment, Society and Health", "Modern Science Medicine and Chinese Society", "Western Medical History", and "Disease, Medical and Cultural" courses; while "Ethics and Moral" has expanded to courses such as "Ethics and Neuroscience", "Ethics", "Bioethics", and "Cognition"; and the field of "Social and Economic" has established "Health and Society". The speakers of the courses as mentioned above are mostly the full-time lecturers who specialize in the humanities and social fields of the school. Moreover, some lecturers are also researchers in the humanities and social fields of the Academia Sinica. Through the above courses, our school and our students are able to appreciate the essence and importance of this general education, and at the same time, have a better connection with their professional learning.
