Why do university students have to undertake general education / basic science courses?

According to Article 1 of the University Law, “The University aims to perform research in academics, cultivate talents, enhance culture, serve the society and promote the national development”, which abandoned the declaration of “The university’s aim is to cultivate professionals”. After meeting with Chancellor, in accordance with the spirit of “University Autonomy”, universities are allowed to completely set up their own courses according to their educational philosophy.

It can be said to be a drastic change in the history of higher education development in Taiwan. The development of human society and technology as well as the fine division of labor in different fields results in many contradictions and oppositions in the profession when an issue occurs. Limited trainings and narrow thoughts have also causes serious and complicated moments when resolving matters. In the new higher education system, due to the focus on research, the whole education system got diverted too early. The curriculum in the university is biased towards academic, resulting in students aiming for examination marks rather than learning problem solving in the process of studying. Many students have no intention in learning a variety of knowledge, yet also neglect the importance of evaluating the value of life.

In order to increase the sense of ‘time and space orientation’ in students, as well as the sense of mission and responsibility given by the society, the school has currently set up an education-related planning. Starting from year 2019 when Center of General Education was established, it has strengthened the acknowledgement of teachers and students in the general knowledge and basic science curriculum. With the full support of the committee of Center of General Education, the school has extensively exposed to experience in implementation from prestigious universities including local and overseas to redesign the planning structure and content which are suitable for the university, and at the same time, complete the reform plan. Based on “balanced electives”, the planning of general knowledge is divided into 6 major areas. The “core general course” is set up to allow students to participate in low-level electives. Other than the core general course, other courses are completely open for electives regardless of course field or area. At the same time, the content of basic science competency course will also be drastically changed to become the most important link between the future profession and society.
